The Center for Educational Technology, Tel Aviv (CET, http://www.cet.org.il), Burda – Center for Innovative Communications (http://burdacenter.bgu.ac.il/), and The Center for the Study of the Information Society, at the University of Haifa (InfoSoc,http://infosoc.haifa.ac.il/main_eng.htm, http://www.haifa.ac.il) were jointly sponsoring an international conference in Israel, on the topics of Publishing, Books and the Social and Economic Considerations Related to Online Content and Internet Sites. The conference focused on the following:
o What are the community components required to ensure the economic survival of programs, content repositories and publishing online?
o Online viability of non-English speaking cultures, and other less-than-critical mass linguistic communities: What is the economic potential of niches?
o Open and closed content environments: What are the necessary conditions for the development and sustenance of content communities.
o Books and community: How are social webs weaved around manuscripts?
